Disaster Discovery - What are Shelter Boxes?

Room 1 have been looking at children in disasters all over the world as part of our oral language program. This morning the class were very interested to discover that the tent and equipment provided to the people in the photo was called a Shelter Box and that Shelter Box was a aid organisation.

What is a Shelter Box?

 

They help people set up camps. They help people when they don't have families. The people need shelter that are alone in cities. They help people when they have nowhere to live. By Kyra.

Baked Potatoes

 

Hi Everyone,

One group put potatoes into bags of 10.

Today room 1 are measuring potatoes.We had fun doing it. Some people are counting potatoes in paper bags. Everyone else is finishing their awesome borders. There is a group of people Ms H is working with.They are chopping up garlic. We are going to room 9 and Ms H is showing us how to put the potatoes in the oven and which potatoes will bake faster.Now we are coming back and getting our delicous sausage sizzles and now we are going to eat them

We had expert peers to help.

Our Fair Test.

As part of our 'fairness' week we did a fair test about yeast for making our bread this time.
First we put the right amount of yeast then we put the right amount of sugar.

Then we put in the water. We drew and wrote about what we thought might happen. Then we watched the mixture rise, or not rise.

Friday is food day.



This is a fair test, everything apart from the temperature is the same.

Room 1 often have days when we cook in the classroom. Usually on the week when we do not have Whanau Time in the garden. Here are some pictures of the breadmaking process we went through. The class decided which of the yeast and sugar mixtures for the dough would work the best. The mixture with cold water, luke warm water or warm water. It turned out that both warm mixtures worked. We made bread and and a stir fry from fresh garden veges and home-made tomato sauce. Yum.

The Blues were fun to meet.

Ball passing was a skill we trained in.

We were sitting and waiting patiently for the winning Blues Rugby team to call us up for training drills. The captain Ali Williams talked to us about what we were going to do. Hurray! At last we were in teams and playing fun games. We played cat and mouse, rippa tag and lots of passing skills relays. We ran, we walked, we passed the ball, we lined up quietly, we kicked and we listened very carefully.
Finally our day at Toll Stadium ended. It was time to go back to school. But the fun hadn't quite finished. Back at school we each got a  bag of treats from the Blues. There were lolly snakes, a cool poster and a special glowing Blues flag magnet. Ms Gentil had a great idea for us. Because it was so hot we were all allowed to cool off with a swim in the pool.

Room 1 have an activity called Whanau Time on a Thursday.This is when we look after the school gardens.This Thursday we pulled out the awful , useless weeds called kaikuia because they choke the plants.We were all working together.Some people were using forks to pull out the kaikuia.We used little forks and big forks. The forks and tools come from the garden shed.We had to line up while Ms Higgins showed us how to be safe with the tools.When we had finished we had a wheelbarrow full of kaikuia and other horrible weeds.By Room 1 stars-Tearoha,Sebastian,Shakyla,Tupu,Hannah,Aaron,Tuan.

What Whanau Time is about.

Whanau  Time is when we go outside and experience different things in the garden like planting plants and mulching.We like Whanau Time because: Its a great experience for kids.It is also good because we learn outside the classroom. It's fun and considerate. It helps grow your mind more.
